Reading your lovely essay makes me feel all fuzzy, warm, and comforted. I haven't read full novels in a while, but I've been enjoying comics lately. I savor them, like you're savoring Dickens. I imagine the actions being played out between the boxes, I wonder how everyone involved worked on every little detail in creating art and word in each graphic novel.
I'm glad to hear that you find joy in comics! Yes, comics are a great way of storytelling with their amazing artworks and it's fascinating to think about all the effort that goes into creating each graphic novel.
I have always loved Dickens. I foolishly tried to share this love with my son when he was little via bedtime readings. The length of the sentences didn’t connect with his video game sensibility. Unfortunate...
Haha yeah :) it can be a challenge to engage young readers with classic literature these days, but I'm sure they will develop an appreciation for classic authors in time.
Absolutely! There's something magical about getting lost in the pages of a book and taking the time to truly appreciate the characters and the story. 🙌 Dickens in December is like the perfect way to celebrate the holiday season :)
Love this! I find it strange how some people have made a competitive sport out of reading, with readings goals and bulleted book summaries that are somehow meant to replace the real deal. Slow reading is the way to go!
Re December; I have a Winter Poem on my Substack, about how slow and expansive time can feel in winter. I felt a similar expansiveness being conveyed here, which I really enjoyed ☺️
I completely agree with the value of slow reading. It allows deeper connection with the book. Your winter poem sounds intriguing, I’ll definitely visit it soon to read it :)

There's nothing quite like a slow savouring of a good book is there? Just too good to rush. And yes to Dickens in December!

Nice essay - Arundathi! Slow, or fast, the joy of reading a physical book is always a welcome one.
Absolutely! Thank you so much :)
